Brady Mickelson knows how to play the game. Not just basketball, but the game of life.
As the new kid at school, all Brady wants to do is fit in, make friends, secure a starting spot on the basketball team, and maybe, if he's lucky, shed his v-card along the way.
With his skills on the court, making varsity is a lock.
But the other stuff? Not so much.
The friends come fast and furious once he makes the team but the one friend he really wants is Amy Mitchell, and he sure wouldn't mind losing his virginity to her, either. He thinks he might get his chance at the kick-off party for basketball season...until she bails on him and disappears. The night goes further off the rails when Brady mistakenly walks into a room and finds Amy with three of his teammates.
Brady doesn't want to get involved in the messy aftermath of that night. But Amy becomes a shell of her former self, and everyone has a different story about what happened in that room. Brady has a feeling he knows, but no one, not even Amy, wants to do anything about it. When new rumors surface—rumors that implicate Brady—he's forced to take action.
Even if it means losing friends, and even if it means kissing his hopes of college ball goodbye.
Because everything Brady wants—and the one thing he needs—is in jeopardy.
And he might not be able to play the game after all.
Playing The Game eBook Jeff Shelby
Playing the Game by Jeff Shelby is in the YA genre. I went into this one with the thought that if I didn't like it to start then I wouldn't finish -- I should have known, if Jeff Shelby wrote it then I was going to like it!This is about Brady, a new kid in high school that just wants to play basketball and get along. Being new to the team, Brady isn't awaer of what has been tradition in the past. He isn't a snobby kid and does the right thing, just like his Dad taught him. Since Brady's parents divorced and he is living with his Dad, they don't have a lot of comforts that the other kids do -- no car, no computer and no cell phone, so he isn't up on what is out on social media. After he attended a party, that he went to so that he could talk to Amy, a girl in one of his classes that he's crushing on, he is not aware of what happened that is now hitting everyone's cell phone. He is only told by his teammates what they want him to hear -- even if it isn't the truth.
without giving the story away, this is a definite read. Having been out of high school for 40 years, this story really opened my eyes to what some teenagers are dealing with today and how the system doesn't always work as it should.
Great job Jeff!!!

Playing The Game eBook Jeff Shelby Reviews
Well written
Enjoyed this book for it's light reading, just for fun !
All of Jeff Shelby's stories are wonderful to read,
I was hooked from the first page. It is a hard book to put down and I was sad when it ended. It is hard to believe not many people know if this author . I look forward to any new books he writes - every bit as much as a Harlan Coben, John Grisham , joshlyn Jackson book. Just to name a few.
I am a huge fan, so I thought I'd give Jeff's new YA book a try. I'm an adult, and I've found several YA books that really appeal to me as a reader - and, Jeff did a great job with his first foray into YA novels. With the enjoyable writing style of his other books, well-thought out characters, and a great plot, this book is a winner!
Another great adventure from Jeff Shelby. Although this is written with a younger audience in mind, I found it to be quite enjoyable and even though I did not grow up with the US school/college culture, there was still lots of stuff that I could identify with from my youth. If you have enjoyed Shelby's work in the past, you will enjoy this!
With Playing The Game mystery author, Jeff Shelby, makes his debut in the Young Adult category. I was given an opportunity to read an Advance Reader's Copy of the novel in exchange for an honest review. I have been a long fan of Mr. Shelby's other novels, and was eager to read his take on the YA genre.
Despite the warning provided by the author "please keep in mind that the Young Adult genre is far different than the Mystery/Thriller genre. The voice and the story are significantly different than what you're used to seeing from me, so you probably need to be a fan of YA literature to enjoy this book." I respectfully disagree.
Despite lacking a formal "mystery" or case to solve by a PI or an ex-cop, there is an issue of he said she said. The content is very real with mature actions and consequences. Coming in at 289 pages (PDF document) the story is very tightly plotted and told with urgency. Any fan of Shelby's previous works should enjoy this outing equally. Readers not yet familiar, will embrace a "new" voice in YA that I feel compares to Megan Abbott (Dare Me, The Fever) and E. Lockhart (We Are Lairs).
